Dr. Karen Woods earned her MD degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1983.  She completed her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Tx from 1983-86, and then spent one year as Chief Medical Resident.  She completed her Gastroenterology Fellowship training at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas (1987-89), followed by a Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship (1989-90) at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 1990, she joined Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and was responsible for clinical care and training of GI fellows in Therapeutic Endoscopy. 

She is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and a Fellow of the American Society of Gastroenterology (FASGE).

Since January 2000, she has been a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Baylor in the private practice of Gastroenterology at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.  Dr. Woods is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine (1986) and Gastroenterology (1989).

Dr. Woods has served on the FDA Advisory Panel for Gastroenterology and Urologic Devices in a number of capacities, including Panel Chair (2003-2005), Voting Member (1993-2004, 2010-present), and Consulting Member (2005-2010). 

She is a member of several professional societies including the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). 

Dr. Woods has served as Treasurer of the ASGE Foundation and then as a Councilor on the Governing Board of the ASGE (2007-2010).  Since 2010 she has served as a Foundation Trustee for the ASGE.  She served as the Chair for the Educational Affairs Committee for the ACG from 2001-2004.  During this time, she was also the Chair of the Abstract Selection Committee for the Society.  Dr. Woods continues to be a member of the Practice Management Committee at ACG and will Co-Chair the Practice Management Course at the Annual Meeting in Las Vegas in October 2012.

She has served on many other committees nationally for the ACG and ASGE and on many hospital committees and is a past Officer of the Medical Staff at The Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX.  Her current research interest is in the development of a National Endoscopic Quality Reporting System; a joint project of the ASGE/ACG for which she is a founding/contributing member.
